1.Complete the "Meeting Asciepius" exercise on track #4 of the Dacher CD. Describe your meditative practice(s) for the week and discuss the experience. Explain how mindfulness or meditation has fostered an increase in your psychological or spiritual wellness. How can you continue to apply these practices in your life to foster greater health and wellness?
My meditative practices this week have been relaxing. I can tell the difference in my health when I practice these. I feel like my mind is calmer and I am happier. It will take some time and patience to get good at these. I am going to do these several times a week to achieve integral health.
2. Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself” (P.477) How does this apply to the health and wellness professional? Do you have an obligation to your clients to be developing your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually? Why or why not? How can you implement psychological and spiritual growth in your personal life?
In order for someone to be able to understand what a person is trying to convey they need to have experienced it for themselves.
This applies to a health and wellness professional because they need to practice the things that they tell their patients to do. For example if they tell a patient they need to stop smoking they need to not smoke as well.
Yes, all healthcare professionals have an obligation to develop their health as much as they possibly can and continue to do so. It is important to set an example for the patients.
I can implement psychological and spiritual growth in life by continuing to pray and practice mindfulness.
Hey Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI have found that my meditation practices have gotten better as I do the exercises that we’re doing in class. The way I look at it is like the different styles of martial arts practicing something different than what I am used to, but it is all good. I often use the analogy of a car in comparing the human body. The car needs tires, head lights, mirrors, seats, and the body of the car. Then you have the engine that needs oil, gas, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and the containers to hold the fluids. Just like we need our heart, lungs, and other internal body parts as well as arms, legs, head and all the external parts to let us function as the car needs all it parts working for it to function right.
I’ve been training in the martial arts for about 40 years and the training has allowed me to become more aware of myself as well as my fellow man. When you know that you can defend yourself you really don’t fear much and can show loving-kindness to get it back (Dacher, 2006). The exercise on the CD allowed me to get centered as I saw Jesus in my person that I imagined. Religion is manmade as Jesus was also a man and didn’t get recognized until he was 33 years old. Yet just about everything is based on his life such as the calendar, Christmas, and many other things. It’s sad that people’s greed, money hunger, and abuse of religion can take advantage of those how really believe. That’s why you have to be strong yourself and have inner peace. When you have inner peace you have clarity and awareness (Dacher, 2006).
I also believe that you should practice what you preach and have knowledge of what you’re teaching. My students respect me because they see how I train and how I care also. I find it rewarding when I hear one of my students teach another using one of my lines or technique. Having the map to the island is not enough to tell someone how beautiful the island is or how good the food is because the map is just not enough to give you the details and the experience of being there. The one thing that I tell my students is anybody can kick and punch, but it takes someone with training to do it right.

That's good that your meditations have helped calm your mind. Meditation has not really been a very good exercise for me. I do better writing, praying or singing. I try to meditate sometimes but my mind is often so busy that being still and breathing in good emotions and breathing out bad ones...it just doesn't quite work for me. I find it frustrating, so usually I end up doing another form of mental activity, like writing in my journal. You are right. We need to lead by example. I mean, if we are not healthy, how are we to try to teach others how to be healthy? It would be like an illiterate person try to teach people to read! It just doesn't make sense. Keep up the prayer and meditating. See you in class.

Hi Ashley
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about a person must experience it before they can help someone else. How can I ask you for advice when you do not know my circumstances? We need to know our role in life and play the part. I know some people like to volunteer to help just to be nosey and snoop into your business and don't have a clue how to help you. Great post!!
